POWER/RANGERS UNAUTHORIZED [BOOTLEG UNIVERSE]
If you’re 21 or older, chances are you grew up with a healthy dose of Power Rangers in your afternoon television viewing. Those five colourful spandex-wearing warriors were our heroes, and we loved them, but as we got older and the show remained at the same immature, mediocre level, it got harder to enjoy it.
And now, finally, the franchise has had a reboot, as is inevitable with every superhero-themed narrative these days. Unlike the Captain America, Spider-man, and Fantastic Four style movies that are being churned out so quickly that it seems the filmmakers don’t have the time to actually form a coherent plot or engage-able story, however, this reboot takes a dark, twisted new take on the Power Rangers story and delivers it in a sleek, intriguing new way.
It’s also worth mentioning that this short film is completely unofficial, and was dreamed up by Dredd and The Grey producer Adi Shankar and music video filmmaker Joseph Kahn, who poured their money into this brutal “bootleg”.
“All of Hollywood, they all keep toying around with this dark and gritty concept, and they’re all PG-13,” Joseph Kahn laughs.
“I mean, look at the gunshots! You have a guy going in there shooting a bunch of people and it’s just like puffs of smoke.”
“There’s no repercussions to these gunshots, which to me is even more dangerous than when you actually show some blood,” Kahn explains.
“You’re teaching kids that you can shoot a gun and there’s no repercussions to it. It just looks like you fall down. So when I did the dark and gritty version of this, we go full out. There’s blood, there’s brains, there’s gunshots, there’s sex, there’s violence.”
“I mean, basically we made the version that Hollywood could never make. If I had to watch the dark and gritty reboot, than this is the way I would want it. This is the version I would personally want to see, but I also know this is the version that could never, ever be made in Hollywood. They would be crazy, it would be financially irresponsible, but this is what I personally would like to see out of a Power Rangers film.”
The short film has only been online a couple of days but already the response has been huge and favorable. Check it out for yourself below!
